How to Turn a Skirt into a Dress

18th April, 2022   |   How To...Guides

When is a skirt not a skirt? When it becomes a dress or trousers or shorts or whatever potential you see hidden within it.

This fringed flapper skirt is destined to be worn as a dress – the floor length skirt can easily be hitched up into a dress and given a whole new elevated view of the world.

SO HOW HARD IS IT?

NOT AT ALL!

And if you can’t sew, try the local machinist at your local dry cleaners or a recommended dressmaker – they’ll easily be able to convert this for you.

WHERE DO I START?

First, pull up your skirt to see how it fits.

If it’s too small under the arms or around the bust – simply insert a ‘V’ of elastic under each arm to create more space.

If it’s too small all over – insert a panel of fabric down either side to create more inches. Go for the same colour to blend in, or choose a contrasting colour for a cool pop of vibrancy.

CREATING STRAPS OR ADDING NECKPIECES

If you want straps you could cut a small amount off the bottom of your skirt to create the straps. Or use contrasting fabric matching the inserted panels to tie the look together.

To add a stunning, bespoke neckline, search for ‘neckpieces’ on eBay or Etsy. You’ll find hundreds of incredible options to suit every skirt-to-dress conversion. Prepare to be amazed and inspired.

So open your closets and yank up your skirts – they’re about to become your dresses of dreams.

And the best bit? You’ve been super-sustainable and ultra-creative – get ready to look good and feel good.
